Virgin Atlantic
About the carrier

Virgin Atlantic is, by deliberate design, a long-haul-only carrier with a tightly focused Atlantic network. They fly to where the City and West End business goes — New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Atlanta — and only with widebody aircraft. The joint venture with Delta and Air France-KLM means the schedule effectively triples on the major North American sectors, with through-fares onto Delta domestic on a single ticket.

Upper Class on the A350-1000 — the current fleet flagship — is one of the most consistent Business products on the Atlantic. The seat (built by Safran) is 1-2-1 with privacy partitions, and selected seats in the front row carry full sliding doors. The on-board Loft social space at the back of the cabin remains a Virgin signature. Ground-side, the Clubhouse at Heathrow T3 and Revivals arrivals lounge at Heathrow are the strongest reason many clients stay loyal.

What we book them for.

01

Heathrow T3 Clubhouse

A genuine signature space — full restaurant, in-house cocktails, a spa for treatments, and a games room. The reason many Virgin clients stay Virgin clients.

02

JV schedule density

On the JFK route, Virgin/Delta deliver 6+ daily; on BOS, IAD, ATL the joint timetable beats single-carrier alternatives. Cross-ticketed seamlessly.

03

Revivals at Heathrow

Arrivals lounge after the eastbound red-eye — showers, breakfast, pressed shirts. Quietly the best part of the whole Atlantic experience.

04

Brand consistency

Service is warm rather than ceremonial. Crews stay with the brand longer than at most carriers. Premium feels lived-in, not staged.

Virgin doesn't try to fly everywhere — it flies the Atlantic, and does it with more personality than anyone: Upper Class, the Clubhouse at Heathrow (the finest lounge any UK airline operates), and no First Class to make Business feel like second. Against British Airways it is focus and the Clubhouse against BA's reach and a separate First; like United, it treats the top Business cabin as the whole experience. Tell us your dates and we'll match you to the newest A330neo, where the closing-door Retreat Suite is rolling out.

The take

Our honest read on Virgin Atlantic

Where Virgin’s character shows, and the things worth a call before you book.

Why we rate them
  • Upper Class has real personality The bar — evolving into The Loft social space — the Clubhouse lounges, and a cabin with genuine character. Virgin sells an experience, not just a flat bed, and does it well.
  • The Retreat Suite is the new high On the A330neo, a doored suite with the most space Virgin has ever offered — and a larger six-suite layout debuts on Heathrow–JFK in late 2026. The pointy end is getting sharper.
  • The Heathrow Clubhouse is a destination in itself Among the best business-class lounges in the world — for many regulars, a reason to fly Virgin on its own.
  • Transatlantic done with flair, and a strong Delta partnership The joint venture opens up onward US connections, and Virgin’s focus on the Atlantic means it flies these routes better than carriers spread thin.
Good to know
  • Upper Class varies by aircraft The A330neo has a closing door and the Retreat Suite; the A350-1000 uses a sliding partition rather than a full door; the older 787-9 (retiring through 2026) has neither. We confirm which you’re booking.
  • No First Class — by design Upper Class is the top cabin. If you want a true First product, we’ll point you to a carrier that flies one on your route.
  • The Retreat Suite is rare right now Only a couple of aircraft carry it until the new layout rolls out — we’ll tell you whether your dates can get it.
  • Lounges don’t cover every UK airport The Clubhouses are Heathrow and a few US cities; Manchester has none. We’ll set expectations by departure airport.

The legacy A330-300 has the older herringbone seat, less private, single aisle of access. Reliably booked on Caribbean, Tel Aviv, and West Coast US routes.

The 787-9 herringbone is the oldest of the three Upper Class variants — angled toward the window, with limited privacy. Still lie-flat and 1-2-1 with aisle access from every seat, but the product is showing its age and the 787s are slated for cabin refresh from 2027. Aircraft is reliable and quiet.

Before you ask

Questions we're asked about Virgin Atlantic.

Does Virgin Atlantic have First Class?

Virgin doesn’t fly First Class — and that’s rather the point. With no cabin above it, Upper Class and the Clubhouse are the top of the experience, never the tier-two afterthought they can become on airlines that keep a First class above Business. For most travellers it makes Virgin the most relaxed way across the Atlantic.

Which Virgin Atlantic aircraft has the best Upper Class?

The A330-900neo. It has the newest seat, a closing door for privacy, and the Retreat Suite. The A350-1000 is excellent too but has a sliding partition rather than a full door; the older Boeing 787-9 has the dated herringbone seat and is being retired through 2026. We confirm which aircraft is on your flight before booking.

What is the Retreat Suite?

It is Virgin's most private Upper Class seat, found only on the A330neo — a larger seat with an ottoman that doubles as a companion seat, so someone can join you for a meal. Today it is a pair of seats; the new premium A330neo layout arriving from late 2026 triples that to six.

What is the Virgin Clubhouse?

Virgin's flagship lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 — Heatherwick-designed, with brasserie sit-down dining, a cocktail bar, spa treatments and a hair salon, more private members' club than airport lounge. There are Clubhouses at New York, Boston, San Francisco, Washington and Johannesburg too; Manchester does not have one.

How much is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class from the UK?

Indicatively from £X,XXX return on the contracted trade fares we hold, below Virgin's own price. Tell us your dates and the exact figure follows the same hour.

Is Virgin Atlantic part of an airline alliance?

Virgin is not in one of the three global alliances, but it runs a deep transatlantic joint venture with Delta Air Lines, which owns 49% of the airline. In practice that means smooth connections onto Delta's US network and Delta lounge access where Virgin has no Clubhouse of its own.
