American Airlines
About the carrier

American is the largest airline in the world by fleet, and its long-haul flagship is now a Business suite with a sliding door — Flagship Suite — on the Boeing 787-9P, a premium-heavy Dreamliner carrying 51 Business seats in a 1-2-1 layout, eight of them the larger Flagship Suite Preferred. The same suite is rolling out across the 777-300ER fleet through 2027, where it takes the place of the old Flagship First and makes Business the top cabin. On the carrier's other widebodies — the 777-200, the 787-8 and the standard 787-9 — Business is the older reverse-herringbone seat: fully flat and private, but without a door.

American is also the last US carrier still offering a genuine intra-US First class on a widebody — the JFK-LAX/SFO transcontinental, operated by 777-300ERs with Flagship First. The Flagship First Dining facility at JFK (and DFW, MIA, ORD, PHL) is a sit-down restaurant inside the lounge — quietly one of the best meals you can have in an airport in the United States.

The new Business product, 1-2-1 with doors, walk-up bar, wireless charging. Among the best US-carrier Business products. Rolling out on 787-9P from 2024.

A separate sit-down restaurant inside the Flagship Lounges. Open to Flagship First and Flagship Business passengers on international or transcon flights.

03

Network density (US domestic)

DFW, MIA, ORD, PHL and CLT hubs make American the deepest US-domestic carrier in oneworld. Through-fares onto BA / Qatar / Iberia / JAL highly flexible.

04

JFK-LAX/SFO transcon First

The last surviving widebody domestic First in the US — 777-300ERs running the JFK-LAX/SFO transcon with Flagship First. Worth specifying as a one-leg luxury.

There is a brand-new Business suite with a door — Flagship Suite — and it is the reason to look at American again, while the old Flagship First lives out its final years before the retrofit retires it. American and British Airways are joint-venture partners across the Atlantic, so routes and fares run near-identical; the choice comes down to which aircraft has the new seat and which lounge and terminal you prefer. Against United it is Flagship Suite against Polaris. Tell us your dates and we'll find the flight with the cabin you want.

The take

Our honest read on American Airlines

Where AA’s reach and new cabin deliver, and the details worth a call before you book.

Why we rate them
  • The new Flagship Suite is a serious leap Doored 1-2-1 suites — including eight extra-private “Suite Preferred” seats — on the 787-9P. On the right aircraft, AA’s Business stands with the best transatlantic products.
  • Unrivalled US onward reach Through the BA joint venture and AA’s vast domestic network, almost any American city is one connection from your transatlantic flight. For travel beyond the gateways, that’s the whole game.
  • Joint-venture pricing works in your favour AA and BA price transatlantic fares within a few percent of each other, which often opens up options — a practical advantage we use at the desk.
  • Flagship lounges and dining at the top The Flagship First Dining experience, where it still operates, and the Flagship lounges are a genuinely premium ground experience.
Good to know
  • The Flagship Suite is on a small, growing fleet Around a dozen 787-9P aircraft so far, on select routes (Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, LA, increasingly JFK). Which one flies your date matters enormously — we confirm it.
  • The 777-300ER retrofit is mid-flight Until it completes (~late 2027), you might get the new layout or the older reverse-herringbone. We’ll tell you which.
  • Flagship First is being phased out The old First cabin survives only on un-retrofitted 777-300ERs and is disappearing — if you’re chasing it, time is short, and we’ll find it while it lasts.
  • Older Business still flies some routes The 777-200ER and standard 787s carry an older seat — a reason to let us route you onto the newer metal.

Before you ask

Questions we're asked about American Airlines.

Which American Airlines flights have the new Flagship Suite (the one with doors)?

The Boeing 787-9P (the “P” is for premium) and retrofitted 777-300ERs, which roll out from 2026. To London the suite is on the Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Los Angeles services and increasingly New York. Other aircraft still fly the older reverse-herringbone Business seat. Look for “787-9P” or “78P” on the booking, or let us check the aircraft for you.

Does American Airlines still have First Class?

If flying American’s First Class is on your list, now is the moment, and we’ll find it for you. Flagship First still flies on the un-retrofitted 777-300ERs, but the retrofit programme is gradually replacing it with a larger Business suite, Flagship Suite Preferred, through 2027. Tell us your route and dates and we’ll put you on a flight that still has the First cabin while it lasts.

What's the difference between Flagship Suite and Flagship Suite Preferred?

They share the same suite shell. Preferred is the larger front-cabin version — a wider footprint, a bigger screen, a buddy-dining ottoman and extended dining — with only a handful of seats per aircraft, taking the place of the old Flagship First.

How do American Airlines and British Airways work together?

They are transatlantic joint-venture partners, which means the same routes, fares typically within a few percent of each other, and Avios and AAdvantage miles usable on both. In practice the decision comes down to aircraft, lounge and terminal rather than price — and we line those up for you.

How much is American Airlines Flagship Business from London?

Indicatively from £X,XXX return on the contracted trade fares we hold, below American’s own price. Tell us your dates and the exact figure follows the same hour.

What lounge do I get with American Airlines?

International Flagship Business and First passengers use American’s Flagship Lounges at its main US gateways — New York, Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami — with sit-down Flagship First Dining where it still operates. At Heathrow you use American’s Terminal 3 lounge.
